Converting a garage into a habitable room usually leads to the most difficult design decision with the door. Do you put in a front door, keep the garage style door for access to storage, or find some other alternative solution? The material impacts how well insulated the new space is, your security, and how the new space relates to the rest of your house. Here’s how steel, aluminium, and wood stack up, and how to determine which works best for your conversion.

The Door: More Important than You’d Think

When it comes to a simple garage door replacement, the main concerns are typically security, ease of use, and kerb appeal. In a conversion, the door (or its replacement) has to do more work:

  • It might have to fit the style, colour, and proportions of your front door.
  • It must give good thermal performance since the space will be heated and occupied.
  • If part of the garage is kept for storage or a utility area, the door must separate that space effectively.
  • Planning and building regulations may decide what can be installed, especially on the street-facing elevation.

Steel Doors and Frames

Steel is the most common material for garage doors in the UK, and it still makes sense to use it even when the garage is being converted. Nowadays, steel doors are usually insulated with a foam core between two skins, giving decent thermal performance without too much weight.

Steel works especially well when it comes to conversions:

  • You’re keeping a smaller door for bin or bike storage while changing the rest of the space
  • Cost is important since steel usually costs less than timber
  • Low maintenance is key, since steel doesn’t need repainting as often as timber

Steel doors can appear utilitarian when compared to the rest of the house that may have a more traditional or characterful frontage. However, some manufacturers now offer woodgrain finishes that can help close this gap, so it’s worth asking for samples before ruling out steel doors.

Aluminium Doors and Frames

Aluminium has become more common for conversions, especially when a slim, modern look is desired. It doesn’t rust, is lighter than steel, and holds a powder-coated finish very well, meaning colours stay true for years without flaking or fading a lot.

Aluminium works well for conversions where:

  • You want large glazed sections, like a bi-fold door or a set of French doors opening onto the garden.
  • The property has a modern or minimalist design, and slim sightlines are important.
  • Low maintenance is a must, and you want to avoid having to paint regularly.

Since aluminium conducts heat easily, any glazed or slim-profile aluminium unit needs a proper thermal break and good quality double or triple glazing to prevent cold spots and condensation in the converted room.

Timber Doors and Frames

While there are many materials to choose from, timber is still the go-to when matching a period or characterful front door, or when the entire point of the conversion is to make the space blend in with the rest of the house. A well-made timber door, painted or stained to match the joinery in your existing space, can make a conversion look like it was part of the original build.

Timber is suitable for conversions when:

  • Priorities are kerb appeal and matching existing woodwork.
  • The property is either period, listed, or in a conservation area where planners prefer traditional materials.
  • You’re OK with committing to periodic repainting or staining to protect against damp and rot.

The trade-off is maintenance. Timber must be properly treated and eventually repainted, especially on exposed elevations, or you could end up with warping and damp problems creeping in around the frame. Engineered timber and composite options can lessen this work while keeping most of the visual warmth of real wood.

Matching the Front Door

One missed detail is proportion. Garage doors that open to the front of the house are bigger than normal doors. Just getting “the same door but bigger” usually won’t look right. You need to compare:

  • Colour – use the specific paint colour from your front door when possible.
  • Panel style – use either raised, flush, or glazed panels that match the current design.
  • Ironmongery – select handles, hinges, and letterbox pieces that match the finish.
  • Glazing pattern – if your front door has a fanlight or side panels, choose a matching glazing for the new door.

Insulation and Moisture Considerations

No matter what material you go with, the door and frame are one of the biggest spots for potential heat loss in a converted garage, so it’s worth going with the best insulation your budget lets you have. Look for:

  1. Actually shown U-value for the door itself rather than the frame.
  2. Complete weather seals around the full edge, not simply on the threshold.
  3. Add a damp-proof course under the new frame given that garage floors usually sit at a different height than the rest of the house.
  4. Ensure there’s proper ventilation if the original garage had none, to keep moisture from getting trapped in the walls after being plastered.

Making the Decision

No one answer is correct. Steel is a good value option, aluminium fits better with modern glazed designs, and timber matches more traditional joinery. For most conversions, the age and style of the property, how close the new opening needs to match the front door, and the level of maintenance you’re willing to do are the main deciding factors. The best way to see which option fits your home is to get a few quotes with samples of each material shown side by side before making a decision.
